My wife and I recently stayed at Two Styx with a group of friends and just loved it! The accommodation, both at the house and the cabins, was absolutely perfect for a getaway from work and town life, the amenities were surprisingly luxurious for such an out-of-the-way spot, and our hosts Russell and Jenny were really great company. The wildlife was also abundant, including some pretty spectacular birdlife ( a friend spent a disproportionate amount of time timing to get the perfect photo of a Flame Robin that has claimed the house as his territory), and the ubiquitous wallabies and kangaroos. There’s even a platypus that has chosen to take up residence in the property’s main dam. Kicking back with a beer or a wine in the evenings, the sense of relaxed solitude was marvelous – and it’s only an hour away from Armidale!

Two Styx is located close to Thungutti Camping Area and the foot of the climb to Point Lookout, so it was an ideal base for our bushwalks. Now, we’re not the most experienced bushwalkers in the world, but we absolutely loved Tea Tree Falls Walk, with its stands of Antarctic Beech, and the walk branching off south of the road near Tom’s Cabin to Lyrebird Walk, then on to Platypus Lookout and Point Lookout itself. A special treat was being led by Russell back home through the fire trails and scrub on their property (which at its furthest point is not far west of the picnic area at Point Lookout) rather than via the road or the marked walking tracks. For a weekend exploring Point Lookout and the New England National Park, this is the place to stay, and we’ll certainly be going back.
